The 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially arrived, and Houstonians are already proving why Bayou City is one of the premier soccer hubs in North America.

On Thursday afternoon, June 11, 2026, the official FIFA Fan Festival in East Downtown (EaDo) officially reached its maximum capacity of 7,500 attendees—a full twenty minutes before the highly anticipated opening tournament match between Mexico and South Africa even kicked off.

A Sea of Green in EaDo

The 250,000-square-foot outdoor entertainment venue, located right next to Shell Energy Stadium, opened its gates at 12:30 PM, welcoming thousands of eager soccer fans dressed in vibrant green El Tri jerseys. By 1:40 PM, tournament organizers with Houston’s World Cup Host Committee officially confirmed that the gates had to be temporarily closed to monitor safety lines.

"The energy down here is absolutely electric," said Chris Canetti, president of the FIFA Houston 2026 World Cup Committee. "This is the biggest event our city has ever seen, and the fact that we've hit a packed house on day one shows just how deep soccer culture runs in Houston."

For fans who found themselves locked out of the main venue, the party didn't stop. A massive, official overflow watch party quickly filled up down the street at Shell Energy Stadium, ensuring that thousands more could still experience the community atmosphere.

What to Expect If You Go

The Houston Fan Festival will be running for 34 of the tournament’s 39 days, functioning as a free, all-ages gathering place for fans to enjoy every single match on giant, high-definition screens.

Because organizers anticipate up to 15,000 visitors cycling through daily, local officials are urging people to plan ahead for future matchdays.

  • The Schedule: Gates open 90 minutes prior to the daily kickoff of the tournament's first game and close immediately following the conclusion of the final match of the night.

  • The Location: Nestled in EaDo, the main public entrances are located on Walker Street and Polk Street.

  • Transportation: Parking is highly limited around the venue closures. Attendees are strongly encouraged to use METRORail or stick to the dedicated rideshare drop-off and pickup lot located at the corner of Leeland and Chartres Streets.

  • Amenities: To combat the June Texas heat, the park is outfitted with massive 144-foot cooling canopies, more than 40 local food and beverage vendors, and an interactive small-sided soccer pitch.

With upcoming matches scheduled throughout June and July—including the highly anticipated United States matchups and knockout rounds coming straight to NRG Stadium—Houston’s downtown core is bound to remain the epicenter of world soccer for the next month. If today was any indicator, you'll want to get in line early.
