Houston, We Have a Problem: Netherlands Runs Through Sweden In 5-1 Win

If you looked only at the final scoreline from Houston Stadium on Saturday, you would think Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands completely systematically dismantled Sweden from the opening whistle to the final horn. A 5-1 thrashing in Group F is, on paper, a statement victory that puts the rest of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on notice.

But football is rarely that simple. The reality of what transpired in Texas is far more chaotic, wildly entertaining, and bizarrely deceptive. The Dutch were a paradoxical masterpiece: utterly lethal at one end, and remarkably fragile at the other.

The Illusory First Half

Let’s be completely honest: Sweden will look at the 2-0 halftime score and wonder what kind of alternate reality they were living in. Led by Viktor Gyökeres and Yasin Ayari, the Swedes actually out-shot the Dutch 10 to 7 in the opening 45 minutes. They pinned the Netherlands back, asked serious questions of the Oranje backline, and even had a Gustaf Lagerbielke equalizer ruled out for offside.

The difference? Bart Verbruggen and pure, unadulterated clinical finishing.

While Sweden squandered their chances, the Dutch feasted on crosses. Brian Brobbey, getting the nod at the No. 9 spot over Donyell Malen, justified his selection within 16 minutes, bagging a clinical brace. Denzel Dumfries was an absolute menace on the right flank, providing the service for Brobbey’s "Double Dutch" show. It was a masterclass in efficiency—the Netherlands didn't dominate the game, they dominated the boxes.

The Gakpo Show and the Second-Half Blitz

Any hope Graham Potter’s Sweden had of staging a second-half comeback was thoroughly erased by Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo.

Within a nine-minute window after the restart, Gakpo put on a clinic. First, he tapped home yet another perfect, low cross from the indefatigable Dumfries. Minutes later, he cut inside from the left wing and rifled a brilliant effort past Kristoffer Nordfeldt to make it 4-0.

Sweden managed a brief spark of life when substitute Anthony Elanga curled a beautiful shot past Verbruggen in the 59th minute, but it was nothing more than a cosmetic consolation. Crysencio Summerville, coming off the bench, put the final exclamation point on the afternoon, drilling a low strike into the corner to make it 5-1.

The Verdict: Contenders or Pretenders?

Scoring five goals on just seven shots on target is a staggering statistic. Before this tournament, pundits questioned whether this Dutch side possessed the ruthless edge required to go all the way. Those questions have been emphatically answered.
