Group Stage Mayhem: How Portugal's latest victory affects the Group K standings
Portugal has silenced their critics in their game against Uzbekistan.
After a tie with DR Congo, Portugal was in the hot seat with star player Cristiano Ronaldo not performing very well against them. Many wrote off Portugal early, and others questioned if the nation could make it past the group stage.
After a 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan, many of those questions have been answered with a defining yes. Portugal has made a statement with their victory, and their newfound confidence looks to put them in a more secure position in Group K.
However, their next matchup against Colombia will prove if this Portugal team is ready for the round of 32, as Colombia currently holds the lead in Group K. After two wins against the other group opponents, Portugal has to win or draw if they want to become the kings of Group K.
Colombia and Group K
Colombia currently holds the lead in Group K with decisive victories over DR Congo and Uzbekistan. They currently have four points scored between the two games, and look to add more against Portugal in their upcoming matchup.
One of their biggest stars is Daniel Muñoz, who has scored twice throughout the past two games. Muñoz is one of Colombia's best defenders, and has some experience in the Premier League as a defender for Crystal Palace F.C.
While Crystal Palace hasn't had a productive year when it comes to league play, Muñoz has definitely been one of the best players for Colombia's world cup run. As one of Portugal's best forwards, Ronaldo will have some trouble going up against Muñoz.
Another player that could spell trouble for Portugal is Luis Diaz, as he has had the most attempts at a goal for Colombia with seven so far, even scoring one against Uzbekistan. As one of Colombia's best forwards, Portugal's defense has to play well if they want to minimize Diaz's chances at scoring.
How Portugal can beat Colombia
Portugal can beat Colombia if they play smart against the Colombia defense. Ronaldo will be a big target to shut down for Colombia, so other forwards like Rafael Leão will have to step up against Colombia's defense.
Portugal will also need to tighten up their defense, as players like Diaz can get shots on goal very quickly if left unchecked. Players like Ruben Diaz and João Cancelo will have to step up in order to minimize Colombia's offensive efforts.
While most of the pressure is on Ronaldo to score, the most Portugal has to manage is a draw. With a draw against Colombia, they keep their spot in second place heading into the round of 32.
While Colombia may be a major roadblock when it comes to standings, Portugal can win if they manage to get through Colombia's top tier defense.
