The Democratic Republic of Congo scripted one of the most unforgettable stories of the opening days of the 2026 FIFA World Cup™, holding European giants Portugal to a thrilling 1-1 draw at NRG Stadium in Houston. On a night intended to celebrate Cristiano Ronaldo's historic entry into a record-equalling sixth World Cup finals, it was Les Léopards who walked away with the history books in hand, securing their first-ever World Cup goal and point.

Early Portuguese Dominance

Roberto Martínez’s side wasted no time establishing their status as pre-tournament favorites. In just the sixth minute, Pedro Neto manufactured space down the left flank and sent an inviting, pinpoint cross into the penalty area. Midfielder João Neves capitalized completely, timing his run to perfection and directing a sharp header past Congolese goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi to give Portugal a 1-0 lead.

Following the opener, the Seleção controlled the tempo and dominated possession, though clear-cut secondary chances proved difficult to come by against a highly organized and compact Congolese backline.

Wissa Answers for History

Appearing in their first World Cup since 1974 (when the nation competed as Zaire), DR Congo refused to bow to early pressure. They steadily grew into the match, capitalizing on a direct and physical counter-pressing approach.

The defining moment for the African nation arrived deep into first-half injury time. In the fifth minute of stoppage time ($45+5'$), Arthur Masuaku delivered a beautifully floated corner toward the back post. Forward Yoane Wissa, left completely unmarked by the Portuguese defense, rose highest to power a header past Diogo Costa. The goal sparked ecstatic celebrations on the pitch and bench, marking DR Congo's historic first-ever goal on the global stage.

Frustration for Ronaldo and Portugal

The second half saw Portugal search frantically for a match-winner, but a lack of creative cutting edge consistently derailed their efforts. Ronaldo, who became the oldest outfield player to ever start a World Cup match, endured a largely peripheral and frustrating afternoon, missing two late targets from cutbacks provided by substitute Francisco Conceição.

João Cancelo appeared to restore the lead early in the second frame with a spectacular overhead kick, but the goal was quickly chalked off after he was caught in an offside position. As the clock wound down, late bookings for Nélson Semedo and Tomás Araújo highlighted a visibly building frustration within the Portuguese squad.

DR Congo's defensive unit, led by Chancel Mbemba and Steve Kapuadi, held firm against late aerial pressure to secure a well-earned and historic result.

What's Next?

The surprising stalemate leaves both nations tied with one point apiece in a wide-open Group K. Portugal will look to rebound and solve their attacking fluidity issues when they remain in Houston to face Uzbekistan, while a confident DR Congo squad travels to Guadalajara to clash with Colombia.
