SEATTLE, WA — The Emerald City was treated to a thrilling Group G opening match as powerhouse Belgium and a resilient Egypt fought to a 1-1 draw at Seattle Stadium. On a day celebrating talisman Mohamed Salah’s 34th birthday, it was a tactical masterclass, stellar goalkeeping, and instant impact from the bench that wrote the headlines.

First Half: Pharaohs Strike First

The match started in predictably intense fashion, with Belgium looking to control possession. Kevin De Bruyne threatened early in the 7th minute, flashing a shot just wide of the left post. However, Egypt’s compact defensive structure completely nullified Belgium's explosive wingers, Jérémy Doku and Leandro Trossard, preventing them from registering a single shot on target in the first 45 minutes.

In the 19th minute, the stadium erupted. On Egypt's very first official shot of the match, Mohamed Salah played a selfless pass to Emam Ashour just outside the box. Ashour didn't hesitate, hammering a thunderous strike past a diving Thibaut Courtois to put the Pharaohs ahead. Egypt held firm through the rest of the half, taking a well-deserved 1-0 lead into the locker room despite trailing in possession (58% to 42%).

Second Half: The Lukaku Effect

Belgian manager Domenico Tedesco rang the changes as the second half progressed, but the game truly turned with the introduction of Belgian legend Romelu Lukaku in the 65th minute.

Incredibly, within 30 seconds of stepping onto the pitch—and before even recording an official touch—Lukaku's sheer presence caused chaos. Youri Tielemans slipped Thomas Meunier down the right flank. Meunier fired a dangerous, driving cross across the six-yard box targeting Lukaku's run. Desperate to block the path, Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany inadvertently bundled the ball into his own net to level the score at 1-1.

A Frantic Finish

The final twenty minutes transformed into a wide-open spectacle. Belgium hunted for a winner, with Kevin De Bruyne pulling the strings. In the 78th minute, a brilliant pass from De Bruyne found Trossard, who set up Lukaku, but his blistering 15-yard strike was heroically blocked by a wall of Egyptian defenders. Minutes later, Egypt's young goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir made a stunning leaping save to deny a powerful header from Brandon Mechele.

Egypt had their own moments on the counter. Omar Marmoush saw a crisp shot expertly blocked by Mechele, and in the 89th minute, the Pharaohs had a passionate penalty appeal waved off by VAR after Zizo went down on the edge of the area following a challenge by Maxim De Cuyper.

Ultimately, both teams settled for a point in a highly entertaining opening encounter that leaves Group G entirely up for grabs.
