Colton Gordon strikes out seven to lead Astros to 4-3 win
Sugar Land’s former left-handed pitcher Colton Gordon made his second major league start on Monday, May 19, against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Facing his childhood favorite team, Gordon set the Astros up for their 4-3 victory by tossing 5.1 innings and allowing three earned runs on three hits and struck out seven. The St. Petersburg, Florida native bounced back from a leadoff single by Tampa Bay’s first baseman Yandy Diaz by sitting down the next 12 batters in a row.
It wasn’t until the bottom of the fifth inning until then Rays got to Gordon with Brandon Lowe’s leadoff single followed by Danny Jansen’s two-run shot to cut into the lead 3-2. The Rays rallied once again in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game 3-3 and that is where Gordon finished his day.
The Astros pushed ahead with a seventh inning go-ahead blast to right field by Jake Meyers and the bullpen held strong to defeat the Rays in game one of the three-game series. Overall the southpaw had an outstanding outing and continues to showcase his elite accuracy with all of his pitches.
Today, the sweeper was his most effective pitch, recording several whiffs and five strikeouts using it.
With the win, the Astros are now 25-22 and sit in second place in the AL West just 2.5 games behind the Seattle Mariners.
