Houston Holds Its Ground: Cougars Beat Oklahoma State 35-32 Behind Conner Weigman

Houston made its fans sweat this one out, but the Cougars gave them plenty to celebrate when it was over.

No. 20 Houston held off No. 18 Oklahoma State 35-32 on Saturday, Oct. 17, at TDECU Stadium, improving to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in Big 12 play. A three-point win might suggest the Cougars barely escaped. My take? Houston earned this one by continuing to execute while Oklahoma State kept turning up the pressure.

There were defensive issues to address and some uncomfortable moments down the stretch. But when Houston needed its offense to deliver, quarterback Conner Weigman kept giving the Cowboys another problem.

Weigman Gave Houston the Answers

Weigman finished with 343 passing yards and five touchdown passes, spreading those scores among Patrick Overmyer, Amare Thomas, Trent Walker and Koby Young. Thomas caught two touchdowns, including a 21-yard score on fourth-and-3 late in the third quarter.

That fourth-down touchdown deserves some attention. Oklahoma State had pulled within 21-17, and Houston faced a decision that could swing the game. The Cougars trusted their quarterback and receiver to finish the possession.

They delivered.

Those are the situations that tell you something about an offense. Moving the ball is one thing. Finishing a drive when the opponent is threatening to take control is another.

Weigman’s performance carried extra weight because Houston needed every touchdown. This became a game where settling for field goals could have been costly.

Early Defensive Stops Made the Difference

Before the second-half scoring picked up, Houston’s defense helped establish the advantage.

Oklahoma State’s first two possessions reached the Houston 5-yard line and 2-yard line, respectively. The Cowboys came away with just three combined points, settling for a field goal before turning the ball over on downs on their next opportunity. Houston eventually took a 14-3 lead into halftime.

In a game decided by three points, those missed opportunities loom large.

Houston’s defense deserves credit for forcing Oklahoma State to leave points behind. An early turnover could have put the Cougars in a difficult spot, but the defense limited the damage and gave the offense room to recover.

That matters when evaluating the whole performance. The second half was rough defensively, but those early stands helped make the final result possible.

The Cowboys Kept Coming, and Houston Kept Responding

Oklahoma State made sure nobody in red could get comfortable.

A 66-yard touchdown reception by Caleb Hawkins, followed by a successful two-point conversion, cut Houston’s lead to 28-25 in the fourth quarter. The Cougars answered with an 85-yard touchdown drive capped by Weigman’s 48-yard scoring pass to Young, pushing the margin back to 10.

That response was huge.

Houston could have tightened up after watching its cushion shrink. Instead, the offense produced another explosive play and forced Oklahoma State to chase again.

Still, allowing the Cowboys to score 29 second-half points is something Houston needs to examine closely. Winning should make the film session more enjoyable, but it should not erase the breakdowns. Against another quality opponent, asking the offense to keep answering touchdowns could become a dangerous habit.

Closing the Game Was Houston’s Best Response

The Cowboys cut the deficit to 35-32 with 4:54 remaining. Houston then kept possession for the rest of the game, converting critical third downs through Thomas and Walker before Weigman added an 8-yard run to help seal the victory.

For me, that finish says as much as the touchdown passes.

With Oklahoma State’s offense rolling, giving the ball back would have created an uncomfortable situation. Houston took responsibility for ending the game with its own offense.

That is how you protect a narrow lead: keep moving the chains until the other team runs out of chances.

What's Next

Houston fans have every reason to enjoy this victory. The Cougars beat a ranked conference opponent, got a five-touchdown performance from their quarterback and handled the pressure of a close finish.

There is work to do on defense, especially when it comes to limiting explosive plays. But this team showed the confidence to keep attacking and the discipline to finish its final possession.

The next step is making that level of execution consistent. For one Saturday night, though, Houston gave its fans a good reason to believe the Cougars can keep winning these kinds of games.
