The World Cup in 2026 has had some amazing storylines come out of the group stage and into the knockout rounds. Cape Verde became one of the most popular teams to come out of the group stage, and many favorites to win the tournament got eliminated before they could reach the knockout rounds.

Many of the groups looked to be the strongest, but the one group that could change how the knockout stage happened was group K. Group K had a World Cup favorite in Portugal, and Colombia wasn't too far behind them.

However, Group K ended their run in tragedy, with all three teams from the group unable to make it past the round of 16. The team that got the closest was Colombia, but too many missed penalty kicks eliminated them from any further progress.

When we reflect on Group K, many fans had world cup expectations for the top two teams. What led to these heartbreaking losses and what can we expect heading into the 2030 World Cup?

DR Congo

Not many people know, but DR Congo was one of the teams that advanced into the round of 32 as a third place team from the group stage. Their first game in the group stage was against England, and their loss showed the resilience of group K.

Against England, DR Congo had actually scored early in the game, having a 1-0 lead to start off the round of 32. However, England's Harry Kane would end up scoring two more to win the match in the last few minutes.

DR Congo had played well offensively, but their defense was a very big weak point against England. The goalkeeper had an amazing match overall, but the midfielders couldn't hold off the English offense for long.

Portugal

Portugal had a decent start in the knockout rounds, having a close game against Croatia and winning 2-1. However, star player Cristiano Ronaldo didn't look too good against Croatia, and ended up falling to Spain in the round of 16.

Ronaldo hadn't looked his best throughout the tournament, and most of that comes from his current age. His stardom could only last for so long, and it seemed 2026 would be the last year he played for Portugal.

With this loss, Portugal has officially lost their shot at a World cup for 2026, and possibly even the future. Without Ronaldo, the strategies in Portugal will be more team focused, but will be weaker.

Colombia

Colombia had an amazing group stage, keeping their number one spot heading into the knockout rounds. They successfully beat Ghana 1-0 and looked to be the favorite against Switzerland.

Fate would have other plans, as penalty kicks ultimately decided that Colombia would be eliminated in the round of 16. Both teams had tied 0-0 after overtime, making this one of Colombia's biggest heartbreaks.

Colombia look to be heading out of the World Cup with major positives, with their roster having very young players that could grow into bigger talent for the next World Cup. Colombia will definitely be one of the biggest threats in 2030, but 2026 has ended group K's run for the World Cup.
