OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — The Sugar Land Space Cowboys (Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros) celebrated Independence Day weekend in style, putting together an impressive stretch of baseball at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark against the Oklahoma City Comets.
While the six-game road set concludes Sunday evening, Sugar Land captured the momentum over the heart of the holiday weekend, taking a 3-2 series lead after an electric, rain-shortened Fourth of July victory.
Here is how the holiday weekend unfolded for the Space Cowboys.
Friday: Late-Inning Fight Falls Short
Final Score: Oklahoma City 4, Sugar Land 3
Friday night’s clash turned into a classic bullpen battle after both offenses were held quiet through the first three frames. Oklahoma City struck first, but Sugar Land refused to go away quietly.
Trailing 3-0 in the sixth, César Salazar and Cavan Biggio executed a slick double steal to jumpstart the offense, setting up Pascanel Ferreras for a sacrifice fly to get Sugar Land on the board.
The real drama arrived in the top of the ninth. After Biggio and Ferreras were both hit by pitches, the Space Cowboys scratched across two runs to tie the game at 3-3. The bullpen did heavy lifting to keep it close—featuring a brilliant 2.1 scoreless frames from Trey McLoughlin and a perfect frame from Michael Knorr (who touched 97.8 mph).
Saturday: Fireworks Before the Rain on the 4th
Final Score: Sugar Land 7, Oklahoma City 5 (6 Innings — Called due to weather)
The Space Cowboys didn't waste any time erasing Friday's frustration, generating their own fireworks just seconds into the Fourth of July contest.
On just the second pitch of the game, Cavan Biggio launched a solo home run to right field.
Sugar Land's 1st Inning Explosion:
[Pitch 2] Biggio Solo HR 🚀 (1-0)
[Batter 4] Whitcomb 3-Run HR 💥 (4-0)
The Comets attempted to chip away, but Sugar Land kept the pressure on, capitalizing on a wild pitch and a groundout in the fourth to stretch the lead to 7-2.
Just as the Comets built a bit of momentum to make it 7-5, severe weather rolled into Oklahoma City. Following a 46-minute rain delay after the top of the sixth, the game was officially called, securing the victory for Sugar Land and guaranteed at least a split of the road trip.
Series Standouts
Cavan Biggio: Continued his red-hot stretch, sparking the July 4th win with a leadoff homer and reaching base multiple times over the weekend.
Pascanel Ferreras: Keeping his hitting streak alive, Ferreras drove in crucial runs on both Friday and Saturday, continuing to lead the Space Cowboys' situational offense this week.
The Bullpen: Outside of Friday's tough walk-off frame, the relief unit has been dynamic, keeping an ERA below 2.00 for the week and throwing critical high-velocity scoreless frames.
Next Up: The Space Cowboys wrap up their series against Oklahoma City on Sunday night before returning home to Constellation Field on Tuesday, July 7, to open a fresh six-game homestand against the Albuquerque Isotopes.
