Maria Sanchez, a key player for the Houston Dash, made a surprising move just four months after signing a record-breaking contract. The Mexican forward, who penned a then-NWSL record deal worth $1.5 million in December 2023, has requested a transfer. The current deal is through 2026, with a mutual option for 2027.

Sánchez first joined the Dash ahead of the 2022 regular season after a successful two-year stint in Mexico and has made 46 career appearances in Houston. The American Falls, Idaho native was a key piece in helping Houston make its first playoff appearance in team history. During the 2022 season, Sánchez scored twice during the regular season and was credited with four assists. She contributed to four goals during the 2022 NWSL Challenge Cup and was tied for the second most assists in the tournament with three.

Despite her accolades on her performance with the Dash, Sanchez has requested an immediate trade. She confirmed the news herself via a channel not yet specified (X), thanking fans for their recent support. The reasons behind her request remain unclear. The Houston Dash have only offered a brief statement, emphasizing that Sanchez is still under contract.

While the situation is developing, there are some key details to consider. Sanchez's contract is with the NWSL, not the Dash specifically. This means her current contract would be transferred to any new team she joins. Any interested club would need to be prepared to take on her existing financial commitment.

It remains to be seen where Sanchez will land next. It will most likely be the San Diego Wave. One thing is certain: her desire for a move has ignited a "wave" of speculation about her future in the NWSL.
