Dynamo 2 Turns SaberCats Stadium Into a Fortress With Dominant 3-0 Win Over Real Monarchs

Houston Dynamo 2 didn’t just collect three points Saturday night. They sent another reminder to the rest of the MLS NEXT Pro Western Conference that getting a result at SaberCats Stadium is becoming one of the tougher assignments in the league.

Dynamo 2 defeated Real Monarchs 3-0 on Aug. 8, overcoming a weather delay and turning an early numerical advantage into a convincing victory. Reese Miller, Mattheo Dimareli and Jahmani “JJ” Bell supplied the goals as Houston extended its unbeaten home streak to nine matches — the longest such run in club history. More importantly, the victory moved Dynamo 2 to within one point of first place in the Western Conference.

That last part should get everybody’s attention.

Houston entered the evening third in the West at 12-4-3 with 42 points. This was already a team that had scored 42 goals while conceding only 19, the second-fewest in MLS NEXT Pro, and had just been named the league’s Team of the Month for July. Saturday’s performance looked like a team backing up those numbers rather than simply enjoying them.

The complexion of the match changed almost immediately. Real Monarchs defender Dylan Kropp was sent off in the fifth minute after fouling Arthur Sousa while denying a goal-scoring opportunity near the top of the box. Playing against 10 men that early creates an obvious advantage, but an advantage means little if you cannot punish the opponent for it.

Houston did.

In the 16th minute, Samir Mohammad delivered from the right flank and found Miller at the far post. Miller headed home his fourth goal of the season to put Dynamo 2 ahead 1-0. Only three minutes later, Dimareli produced the kind of strike that deserves more than a casual mention in a box score.

After receiving a pass from D’Alessandro Herrera, Dimareli unleashed a left-footed shot from roughly 25 yards and beat the goalkeeper at the near post. It was his fourth goal of the season and Herrera’s third assist.

Houston Dynamo 2 had gone from knocking on the door to owning the match in about three minutes.

The second half became an exercise in professionalism. Rather than allowing Real Monarchs a path back into the game, Houston protected its advantage. Goalkeeper Logan Erb finished with three saves and recorded his second clean sheet of the season. Collectively, it was Dynamo 2’s eighth shutout of 2026.

Real Monarchs’ night became even more difficult when Nicholas Silva was sent off in the 74th minute, reducing the visitors to nine men.

Then Bell closed the door.

In the 83rd minute, Vinicius Silva carried the ball into the box, worked through two defenders and slipped a pass into Bell’s path. Bell finished for his fifth goal of the season, giving Houston the final 3-0 margin. The goal was particularly encouraging considering Bell had recently returned from international duty with Jamaica’s U-20 national team.

There was another development Saturday that might prove more important down the road than anything appearing in the standings. Newly signed Brazilian midfielder Vitor André and Dynamo Academy player Tristan Cottle both made their professional debuts as second-half substitutes. André, 20, joined Houston after developing in Brazil with Ituano and Palmeiras.

That is what makes this Dynamo 2 season interesting.

Winning matters. Development matters. Doing both simultaneously is the real objective.

Houston has now swept its two-game season series against Real Monarchs and improved its record in the matchup after entering Saturday with a commanding 6-1-1 advantage in the previous eight regular-season meetings.

But the bigger story is SaberCats Stadium.

Nine home matches. Nine without a defeat.

That starts feeling less like a streak and more like an identity.

My Two Pennies

There will be an easy temptation to look at the two red cards and shrug off the 3-0 score. I wouldn't.

Good teams are supposed to punish mistakes. Contending teams are supposed to turn favorable situations into three points without creating unnecessary drama. Dynamo 2 did exactly that Saturday.

Miller scored. Dimareli provided the highlight. Bell put the game away. Erb protected the clean sheet. Two young players made their professional debuts. And Houston walked away sitting within touching distance of the top of the Western Conference.

That sounds like a pretty productive night to me.

The next challenge comes quickly. Dynamo 2 hosts Ventura County FC at SaberCats Stadium on Friday, Aug. 14, at 6 p.m. CT.

Nine unbeaten at home is impressive.

Now let's see if they can make it 10.
