Dynamo FC drop another loss in Leagues Cup
What an utterly deflating night. Over the weekend, the Houston Dynamo FC fell 0-2 to Mazatlán F.C. on Friday at Shell Energy Stadium, a deeply disappointing result in their second Leagues Cup match.
The goals, of course, came from the opposition. Facundo Almada and Fábio Gomes were the ones to rub salt in the wound, both assisted by Nicolás Benedetti, who seemed determined to make the Dynamo's night as miserable as possible. Mazatlán, for their part, now sits at the top of the Liga MX Leagues Cup table—a truly bitter pill to swallow.
The game started with a glimmer of hope, a cruel trick of fate. The Dynamo actually looked like the better team, controlling the shots, possession, and even expected goals. But in the 25th minute, all of that promise evaporated. Benedetti delivered a corner kick, and Almada, somehow completely unmarked, headed it in past a diving Pedro Cruz, who was making his first team debut. A crushing blow that felt entirely undeserved.
Just before halftime, the Dynamo almost, almost, found an equalizer. Femi Awodesu's shot rattled off the crossbar, and the rebound was saved brilliantly by the Mazatlán keeper. It was a moment that perfectly encapsulated the Dynamo's luck—close, but not close enough.
Then, in the second half, the final nail was hammered into the coffin. A sloppy Dynamo turnover led to Benedetti finding Gomes, who scored the final goal to make it 2-0. It was a fittingly frustrating end to a night that promised so much and delivered nothing but disappointment.
